You want to earn a PhD in America. A PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) is the highest academic degree you can earn. It prepares you for careers in research, academia, and specialized professional roles. But you worry about the cost. How can someone from a poor family afford four to six years of study in America?

Here is good news: PhD programs in America are almost always FREE.

This is different from undergraduate and Master's programs, where finding full funding requires careful research and luck. For PhD programs, full funding is the norm, not the exception. Most PhD programs pay you to study. They cover your tuition completely. They also give you a stipend, which is a monthly payment for rent, food, and living expenses. You pay nothing. You actually get paid.

Why do universities pay PhD students? Because PhD students do valuable work. You will conduct original research that advances knowledge in your field. You will teach undergraduate students. You will assist professors with their research. In exchange for this work, the university funds your education.

This guide is for international students from poor backgrounds who want to earn a PhD in America. Your family's financial situation does not matter. If you are accepted to a PhD program, you will almost certainly receive full funding. Your job is to get accepted.

My name is William Kaseu, also known as William Le Beau. I am originally from South Africa. I understand what it is like to come from a country where most people cannot afford American tuition. I went through this process myself, and I want to share everything I learned so that you can do the same.

You can find more of my content on YouTube at @williamlebeau, where I regularly share advice for international students navigating the American education system.

This guide will show you how to get accepted and study for free.
