Honorable Mentions

Other Canadian universities worth considering — including University of Regina's housing scholarship and more.

Honorable Mentions — Other Scholarships Worth Knowing About#

The three universities I covered in detail — UBC, U of T, and SFU — are my top picks. But there are other Canadian scholarships worth knowing about. They will not give you a full ride, but they can make a real difference.

University of Regina — International Student of Distinction Scholarship#

The University of Regina is in Regina, Saskatchewan — the capital of one of Canada's most affordable provinces. This school has a scholarship called the International Student of Distinction Scholarship that I want you to know about.

What Does It Actually Cover?#

Let me be upfront — this is not a full scholarship. The International Student of Distinction Scholarship covers your housing costs. That is it. Your tuition, food, transportation, and other expenses are not included.

Housing in Regina is affordable compared to Vancouver or Toronto, so this award might save you $5,000 to $10,000 per year. That is meaningful, but you still need to pay for everything else.

This is why I list it as an honorable mention rather than a top recommendation. If you need everything covered, focus on UBC, U of T, or SFU first.

Why Consider Regina Anyway?#

Even though the scholarship only covers housing, the University of Regina has some real advantages:

  • Very low cost of living — Regina is one of the cheapest cities in Canada. Rent, food, and transportation are significantly lower than big cities.
  • Easier admission — compared to UBC, U of T, and SFU, the University of Regina has a more accessible admissions process.
  • Strong immigration pathways — Saskatchewan has the Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program (SINP), one of the best provincial immigration programs in Canada. After you graduate and get your PGWP, Saskatchewan makes it easier to apply for permanent residency.
  • Smaller class sizes — you get more personal attention from professors.
  • Less competition for part-time jobs — in a smaller city, it is easier to find work.

How to Apply#

  1. Visit uregina.ca/admissions
  2. Create an account on their portal
  3. Complete the online application — personal details, education history, program choice
  4. Submit your transcripts and English proficiency scores (IELTS 6.5+ or TOEFL 90+)
  5. Pay the application fee — approximately $100 CAD
  6. When completing your application, make sure you indicate that you want to be considered for the International Student of Distinction Scholarship

Who Should Apply to Regina?#

The University of Regina makes sense as a backup option or for students who:

  • Want to live somewhere affordable while studying
  • Are targeting Saskatchewan for immigration after graduation
  • Can cover tuition through savings, family support, or a loan from MPOWER Financing
  • Want a less competitive admissions process

Do not make Regina your only application. Apply to UBC, U of T, and SFU first for full or near-full scholarships, and add Regina as an additional option.

Other Canadian Scholarships to Watch#

Beyond these specific universities, here are some general tips for finding more funding in Canada:

  • Check each university's international student page — many schools offer entrance awards of $5,000 to $15,000 based on grades alone. These are not full scholarships, but they add up.
  • Provincial nominee programs — some provinces offer incentives for international students who study and stay there. Saskatchewan and Manitoba are known for this.
  • External scholarships — organizations like the Aga Khan Foundation, Mastercard Foundation, and others fund international students in Canada. Research these separately.
  • MPOWER Financing — if you have partial funding but need help covering the rest, MPOWER offers loans for international students studying in Canada. No cosigner needed.

The Bottom Line#

Your best bets for full or near-full funding in Canada are UBC, U of T, and SFU. The University of Regina is a solid honorable mention — it covers housing and puts you in one of the most affordable cities in Canada with excellent immigration pathways.

Apply to the top three first. Add Regina as a backup. And always look for external scholarships to fill any gaps.
