Swarthmore College Full Scholarship: $66K Average Aid for International Students

Some people still don't believe me when I say that you can get a full scholarship to study in America. Let me show you exactly how this works using a real example from Swarthmore College — one of the top liberal arts colleges that offers incredible need-based aid to international students.

What is Need-Based Financial Aid?#

Swarthmore College clearly states on their website that your financial aid decision will be based on the college's determination of how much financial aid you will need to afford a Swarthmore education. This is called need-based financial aid, and it's exactly what I've been telling you to look for.

Here's how it works:

  • They look at how much money your family has
  • They determine how much money you need to attend
  • They provide aid to meet that full need

If you come from a very poor family, they could give you a full scholarship to study there. This is why I always recommend applying to schools that offer 100% scholarships to international students based on financial need.

Real Numbers from Swarthmore College#

Let me give you the specific example Swarthmore provides on their website:

"If our financial aid office determines that you need $60,000 to make Swarthmore more affordable, then you will receive a financial aid decision equivalent to $60,000."

But here's the even better news: the average financial aid decision for international students admitted to the class of 2024 was more than $66,000.

That's not a partial scholarship — that's nearly full coverage for most students.

Cost Breakdown#

ComponentEstimated Annual Cost
Tuition & Fees~$58,000
Room & Board~$17,000
Books & Personal~$3,000
Total Cost~$78,000
Average Aid Given$66,000+
Your Cost~$12,000 or less

Why Swarthmore College Works for International Students#

Swarthmore is one of those rare colleges that meets 100% of demonstrated financial need for all admitted students, including internationals. This puts them in the same category as American universities that guarantee full scholarships to poor families.

Here's what makes them special:

  • Need-blind admissions: They don't consider your ability to pay when making admission decisions
  • 100% need met: If they admit you, they'll make it affordable
  • No loans required: Their aid packages typically don't include loans
  • Covers everything: Tuition, room, board, and living expenses

How to Apply for Need-Based Aid#

The application process is straightforward, but you need to be thorough with your financial documentation:

  1. Submit your application through the Common Application
  2. Complete financial aid forms including CSS Profile and FAFSA
  3. Provide family financial documents (tax returns, bank statements, etc.)
  4. Wait for admission decision — aid comes with your acceptance letter

Remember, this is just one example. There are actually 71 schools offering full scholarships to international students that work the same way.

The Application Strategy#

Don't put all your eggs in one basket. Swarthmore is highly competitive, so you need to apply to multiple schools that offer similar aid. Here's my recommended approach:

  • Apply to 10-15 need-based aid schools
  • Include a mix of highly selective and moderately selective colleges
  • Focus on schools that meet 100% of need
  • Don't limit yourself to just famous names

I cover this exact strategy in my guide about 3 steps to get a full scholarship as an international student.

Beyond Swarthmore: More Options#

Swarthmore is just one of many colleges offering this level of support. Other examples include:

  • Williams College
  • Middlebury College
  • Bowdoin College
  • Colby College
  • Hamilton College
