3 Steps to Get a Full Scholarship as International Student in USA

Coming from a poor background shouldn't prevent you from studying in America. I'm William, a South African who received a full scholarship to the University of Rochester in upstate New York, and I want to share the exact three-step process that helped me get there. This isn't just theory — it's the proven method that got me money for tuition, accommodation, food, and extra support.

Step 1: Identify Universities That Offer 100% Financial Aid#

The first step is identifying colleges and universities that give international students full scholarships based on their demonstrated financial needs. Here's what you need to know:

What is Need-Based Financial Aid?#

Need-based financial aid means these universities will meet your demonstrated financial needs. If you don't have any money to attend them, they will give you all the money you need to attend the university — essentially a full ride scholarship.

The Numbers That Matter#

There are approximately 60 schools in America that give full need-based financial aid to international students. These schools will cover:

  • Tuition (full academic costs)
  • Accommodation (housing expenses)
  • Food (meal plans)
  • Additional support money (personal expenses)

I maintain a comprehensive list of these universities on my website, which you can find in my bio. You can also check out my detailed guides on 60+ schools offering full funding to international students.

Step 2: Apply to Multiple Universities Strategically#

Once you've identified these universities, you need to apply strategically to maximize your chances.

Use the Common Application#

You'll apply to these schools using the Common App, which allows you to:

  • Apply to up to 20 schools at a time
  • Choose your favorites from the 60 schools available
  • Get fee waivers for each application (so it won't cost you money)

Required Application Materials#

To complete your applications, you'll need:

  • Essays (personal statements and supplemental essays)
  • Letters of recommendation (from teachers, counselors, or mentors)
  • Standardized test scores (when required)

Make sure you have all documentation ready before the application deadlines. Missing materials can disqualify your application entirely.

The Strategic Approach#

Your goal is to identify and apply to 20 schools from the list of 60. This gives you multiple opportunities while staying within the Common App limit.

Step 3: Complete the CSS Profile (With Fee Waivers)#

The third and crucial step is filling out the CSS Profile, which is essential for receiving financial aid.

Why the CSS Profile Matters#

The CSS Profile allows universities to assess your financial need and determine your aid package. Without it, you won't be considered for need-based financial aid.

Managing CSS Profile Costs#

The CSS Profile does cost money to submit, but here's how to avoid paying:

  • Apply only to schools that offer CSS fee waivers
  • Look for schools with alternative free forms instead of the CSS Profile
  • Join my community for a list of schools offering these options

Schools with CSS Fee Waivers#

I maintain detailed lists of schools that either:

  1. Provide CSS fee waivers for international students
  2. Offer alternative free forms you can submit instead

You can find these lists in my community and in my guides about CSS fee waivers for international students.

How This Creates a Cost-Free Application Process#

When you follow these three steps correctly, you can apply to universities in America without paying any money:

Cost ComponentHow to Avoid It
Application FeesUse Common App fee waivers
CSS Profile FeesApply only to schools with CSS waivers or free alternatives
Additional FormsChoose schools with free financial aid forms

Why This Opportunity Is Life-Changing#

This process is super critical because it gives people from poor backgrounds an opportunity to study in America. The impact can be transformative:

  • No financial barriers to applying
  • 100% of demonstrated need met upon acceptance
  • Complete support system including housing and food
  • Life-changing educational opportunities

The Three-Step Recap#

To get a full scholarship to study in America as an international student:

  1. Identify schools that give full financial aid based on demonstrated financial need (about 60 schools available)
  2. Apply to at least 20 schools using Common App with fee waivers
  3. Fill out the CSS Profile and submit to each school (use only schools with fee waivers or free alternatives)

What Happens After Acceptance#

If you follow these steps and get accepted, the schools will meet 100% of your demonstrated financial needs. If you told them you had no money, you will receive a full scholarship covering everything you need.

Taking Action on This Opportunity#

This is a fantastic opportunity for international students who want to study in America but lack financial resources. The key is taking action and applying strategically to schools that offer these comprehensive aid packages.
