Watchlist Countries (15)
These 15 countries may be added to the ban next. What leaked and what to do if you are from one of them.
Watchlist Countries — You Could Be Next#
As of April 2026. This watchlist was leaked and has not been officially confirmed. Some of these countries may have already been added to the ban by the time you read this. Always verify the current situation before making plans.
This chapter is about the 15 countries on the leaked watchlist. These countries are not currently banned, but they may be added to the ban in the future.
If you are from one of these countries, you need to act NOW — before the door closes on you too.

Why This List Matters#
This list was leaked — it has not been officially announced as part of the ban. But the first travel ban in 2017 started with 7 countries, then expanded. The current ban started with 19 countries and expanded to 39. The pattern is clear: the list keeps growing.
If your country is on this watchlist, there is a real chance it could be added to the ban in the next expansion.
What You Should Do Right Now#
1. Apply to US Universities Immediately#
Do not wait. If you want to study in America, submit your applications NOW. If you get accepted and receive your I-20 before your country is added to the ban, you have a much stronger position. Get your visa appointment scheduled as soon as possible.
2. Get Your Visa Before the Ban Hits#
Once you have an acceptance letter and I-20 form, apply for your F-1 visa immediately. Do not delay. Visa processing times can take weeks or months. The sooner you are in the system, the better.
3. Have a Backup Plan#
Apply to Canadian universities at the same time. If your country gets added to the ban while you are waiting for your US visa, you need an alternative ready to go. Do not put all your eggs in one basket.
4. Consider Starting Online#
University of the People is an accredited American university that is fully online. You can start earning a degree right now, no visa needed. If the ban hits your country, you are already studying. If it does not, you can transfer credits to a US university later.
Egypt, Ethiopia, and Ghana — Special Note#
These three countries send large numbers of students to the United States. If they are added to the ban, the impact will be massive.
Egypt is the largest Arab country and has a huge student population aspiring to study in America. Ethiopia is one of the most populous countries in Africa with a growing number of students going abroad. Ghana is one of the top African countries for US-bound students.
If you are from any of these three countries, do not assume "it will not happen to us." The evidence suggests it can. Prepare now.
Cameroon and DR Congo#
Cameroon and the Democratic Republic of the Congo are already dealing with instability and conflict. Students from these countries face additional challenges in the visa process even without a ban. If your country is added to the list, the F-1 pathway closes entirely.
Apply now. Defer if you have to. But get your acceptance letter in hand.
The Bottom Line#
The watchlist is a warning. You are not banned yet. But the window may be closing. Everything I teach in the "Still Apply" and "University of the People" chapters applies to you right now — except you have the advantage of time. Use it.
