What Is the CSS Profile and How to Complete It (2026)

The CSS Profile is the online form that U.S. universities use to decide how much scholarship or financial aid to give you. It's found on the College Board website — the same organization that runs the SAT.

When you create your account and start the form, it asks questions about your family's income, expenses, savings, and assets. The purpose is to show the university that you can't afford tuition, so they can cover the rest with a full-ride scholarship.

This is how you get your full scholarship. You don't need to apply for a separate full-ride — the CSS Profile is the financial aid application.

How to Complete the CSS Profile#

Step 1: Create Your Account#

Go to cssprofile.collegeboard.org and sign in with a free College Board account. If you don't have one, create one — it's the same account you'd use for the SAT.

Step 2: Add Your Universities#

Add all the universities you're applying to that require the CSS Profile. Each school you add will automatically receive your financial information after you submit.

Not sure which schools require the CSS? Check the list of schools with CSS fee waivers — it also shows which schools use alternative forms instead.

Step 3: Fill In Your Family's Financial Information#

The form will ask about:

  • Parents' income — salary, wages, business income, or any other earnings
  • Parents' expenses — rent, utilities, food, medical costs, school fees for siblings
  • Savings and assets — bank accounts, property, investments
  • Family size — how many people your parents support
  • Other financial details — debts, unusual circumstances, etc.

Be honest. Even if your family's income is low or unstable, just report it accurately. That's exactly what the form is designed for — to show that you need financial help.

Step 4: If Your Parents Don't Have Tax Returns#

This is common for international students, and it's completely fine. If your parents don't have formal documents like tax returns:

  • Estimate your family's income as accurately as you can
  • Upload a short explanation letter saying your family doesn't file taxes or works informally
  • Universities understand that not every country has the same tax system — they will work with you

Step 5: Submit and Pay (Or Get a Fee Waiver)#

Once you've completed the form:

  • Review everything carefully before submitting
  • Pay the small fee — or request a fee waiver inside the system if your family can't afford it

How to Get a CSS Fee Waiver#

You have two options:

  1. Request a fee waiver inside the CSS Profile system — the form will ask if you need one
  2. Email the university's financial aid office — politely ask if they can grant a CSS Profile fee waiver or provide an alternative financial aid form for international students

Most universities will give you the fee waiver if you ask. See the full list: Schools with CSS Fee Waivers

What Happens After You Submit#

Once you submit, your chosen universities automatically receive your financial information. Each school then:

  1. Reviews your family's financial situation
  2. Calculates your Expected Family Contribution (EFC) — what they think your family can afford
  3. Covers the difference with a scholarship package — tuition, housing, food, books, and more

That's it. You don't need to apply for a separate full-ride scholarship. The CSS Profile is how schools determine your scholarship amount.

Key Tips#

TipWhy It Matters
Submit before the deadlineEach school has its own CSS deadline — often January or February
Be honestSchools verify your information. Dishonesty can result in losing your scholarship
Include all documentsBank statements, income proof, and any financial documentation you have
It's okay to estimateIf you don't have exact numbers, estimate and explain
Ask for fee waiversDon't let the fee stop you from applying
