Study in America: 3 Key Reasons Why International Students Choose USA

When I decided to come to America in 2013 to pursue my education, I had three compelling reasons that drove my decision. These same reasons remain just as relevant today in 2024, and I believe they'll continue to be true for the next decade. If you're an international student considering studying in America, these insights from my personal journey might help clarify why the USA should be at the top of your list.

I started my American education journey at a community college before transferring to a four-year university for my bachelor's degree. The three reasons that brought me here have proven to be everything I hoped for and more.

The Undeniable Prestige of American Education#

During my time in South Africa, whenever I met someone who had studied at an American school (and this wasn't even Ivy League institutions, just regular American universities), they were always looked upon with respect and seen as exceptionally intelligent.

This prestige factor extends globally. Having attended and graduated from American schools, I can personally attest to the doors this opens when applying for jobs worldwide. There's a certain element of prestige that you're given when you come from an American school.

Consider the big names:

• MIT
• Stanford

These institutions are viewed as the pinnacle of higher education — what all other schools aspire to become. But here's what many people don't realize: even at state schools, you'll often have professors who graduated from Ivy League universities or Stanford. Academic Freedom: Study What You Actually Want#

This was probably the most personally important reason for me. In South Africa, I faced a major obstacle: my math scores weren't great, and because of this, I couldn't study Actuarial Science — which was exactly what I was interested in pursuing. My high school math score literally prevented me from studying what I wanted at university.

This doesn't happen in America.

Here's how it works in the US:

• Your high school scores and SATs are only used to get you into the university
• They're NOT used to prevent you from pursuing any major once you're accepted
• Even if you failed math in high school, you can still major in math at university if you've been admitted

This system gives you incredible flexibility. In many countries around the world, your test scores from high school directly influence what major you can take or pursue in college and university. America breaks this pattern completely.

You have the responsibility and freedom to study whatever you like, regardless of your high school grades. This was probably the biggest factor in my decision to come to America — I didn't have the opportunity to study what I wanted in South Africa, but America opened that door.

The Money Factor: Earning Potential That Changes Lives#

This is probably the biggest and most obvious reason to study in America, and the numbers speak for themselves.

Starting Salaries That Make a Difference#

Once you graduate from a university in America, you're going to earn significantly more than you would in most other parts of the world. Americans might not always realize this, but $40,000-$50,000 starting salaries represent substantial money in many parts of the world, including within America itself.

When you're earning $50,000 and saving some of that money, the conversion to your home currency often results in impressive purchasing power.

My Personal Experience#

I can share my own story as proof: when I graduated with my bachelor's degree, my first job paid me $55,000. As an international student who had essentially nothing before, I went from making zero to $55,000 — which was equivalent to about a million Rand at the time.

It gets even better when you pursue fields like computer science or earn a master's degree with full scholarship, as these often push you above the $100,000 mark. That's truly exceptional money that can transform not just your life, but potentially your family's circumstances as well.

I came to America in 2013, and I can confidently say that all three of these reasons remain just as true today. The prestige of American education continues to open doors globally.
