What Makes Pomona Special#
1. 100% of Need Met — No Loans#
This is the big one. Pomona guarantees to cover 100% of your demonstrated financial need, entirely with grants — free money you never pay back. No loans in the package.
If your family earns $30,000 per year or less, you will likely pay $0. The total cost of attendance is over $85,000/year, but Pomona covers every dollar your family cannot.
According to Pomona's own data, over 44% of international students receive financial aid, and the average scholarship package is approximately $74,000 per year. That's nearly the entire cost of attendance covered in free money.
2. World-Class Education#
Pomona is ranked #4 among national liberal arts colleges. It is part of the Claremont Consortium — 5 undergraduate colleges and 2 graduate schools that share resources. You can take classes at any of the 7 schools, giving you access to far more courses than a typical small college.
3. California Location#
Claremont is near Los Angeles with sunshine nearly year-round. You get the benefits of a small, safe college town with access to one of the world's most exciting cities for internships, networking, and career opportunities.
4. Small Classes, Real Mentorship#
With only ~1,700 students and an 8:1 student-to-faculty ratio, your professors will know your name. You will get research opportunities, personal mentorship, and recommendation letters that are deeply specific to you.
Financial Aid Breakdown#
If you are admitted with full financial need, here is what a typical Pomona aid package covers:
| Cost | Amount/Year | Covered? |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition | ~$60,000 | Yes — fully covered |
| Room and Board | ~$20,000 | Yes — fully covered |
| Books and Supplies | ~$1,000 | Yes — covered |
| Personal Expenses | ~$1,500 | Yes — covered |
| Travel | Varies | Yes — travel grants available |
| Total Cost | ~$85,000/year | $0 out of pocket with full aid |
All grants. No loans. You graduate debt-free.
SAT/ACT — Test-Optional#
Pomona is test-optional. You do NOT need to submit SAT or ACT scores.
- If you have strong scores (SAT 1450+ or ACT 33+), submitting them may strengthen your application
- If your scores are average or below, leave them off — it will not hurt you
- This is great for international students who may not have easy access to testing centers
English Proficiency Requirements#
If English is not your first language, you must submit one of these:
| Test | Minimum Score |
|---|---|
| TOEFL iBT | 100 |
| IELTS | 7.5 |
| Duolingo English Test | 120 |
These are competitive minimums — aim higher if possible. If you attended an English-medium school for 4+ years, you may be able to request a waiver. Contact Pomona's admissions office to ask.
CSS Profile and Financial Aid Application#
To get financial aid, you must complete financial aid forms. You have two options:
Option 1: CSS Profile#
Go to cssprofile.collegeboard.org and complete the form.
What you need:
- Parents' income information and tax returns (or equivalent)
- Bank statements
- Information about property, assets, and family expenses
CSS fee waivers are available for students with financial need. Check this list: Schools with CSS Fee Waivers
Watch my CSS Profile walkthrough: How to Fill Out the CSS Profile
Option 2: Pomona International Financial Aid Application#
If you cannot afford the CSS Profile, Pomona offers a free alternative — their own International Financial Aid Application. This shows how committed they are to making the process accessible to everyone.
How to Apply — Step by Step#
Step 1: Submit Your Application#
Apply through the Common App or QuestBridge.
What you need:
- Common App personal essay (650 words max)
- Pomona supplemental essays (2-3 short essays)
- High school transcripts (translated to English if needed)
- 2 teacher recommendations + 1 counselor recommendation
- English proficiency scores (TOEFL/IELTS/Duolingo)
- SAT/ACT scores (optional)
Application fee: $70 — fee waivers available through the Common App if you have financial need.
Step 2: Submit Financial Aid Forms#
Submit the CSS Profile (or Pomona's free alternative) and any additional documents Pomona requests. Check your application portal regularly.
Step 3: Wait for Your Decision#
Pomona will review your application and financial situation together (need-aware). If admitted, your acceptance letter will come with a complete financial aid package.
Deadlines#
| Round | Application Deadline | Financial Aid Deadline | Decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early Decision I | November 1 | November 1 | Mid-December |
| Early Decision II | January 1 | January 1 | Mid-February |
| Regular Decision | January 8 | January 8 | Early April |
| Transfer | February 15 | February 15 | Late April |
Pro tip: If Pomona is your #1 choice, consider Early Decision. ED acceptance rates are significantly higher than Regular Decision. Pomona guarantees to meet your full financial need even in ED. If the aid package doesn't work, you can be released from the binding agreement.
Need-Aware: What It Means for You#
Pomona is need-aware for international students. This means your financial need IS considered during admissions. If two equally strong applicants apply and one needs full funding while the other can pay, the one needing less aid may have a slight advantage.
But do not let this stop you from applying. Pomona admits many full-need international students every year. If you are a strong applicant, apply regardless of how much aid you need.
Transfer Students#
Pomona accepts international transfer students and meets 100% of demonstrated financial need for transfers — this is extremely rare.
Transfer requirements:
- At least 1 year of college coursework (24+ credits)
- College transcripts
- Transfer essay
- 2 professor recommendations
- CSS Profile or Pomona's alternative for financial aid
- Deadline: February 15
- Acceptance rate: ~8.6%

- Community impact — What have you done for the people around you? Leadership, service, mentoring, building something
