20 U.S. Colleges That Give the Most Financial Aid to International Students — Ranked by Amount

These are the 20 U.S. universities that give the highest average financial aid per year to international bachelor's degree students — ranked from most to least.

These aren't token scholarships. The top school on this list averages over $90,000 per year in aid. The school at #20 still averages over $80,000 per year. At these levels, the scholarship covers virtually your entire cost of attendance.

What These Numbers Mean#

The average aid is the mean financial aid package awarded to international students at each school. Here's what that covers at most of these universities:

ExpenseTypical CostCovered by Aid?
Tuition and fees$55,000–$65,000Yes
Room and board$16,000–$20,000Yes
Books and supplies$1,000–$2,000Yes
Health insurance$2,000–$4,000Yes
Personal expenses$1,500–$3,000Often yes
TravelVariesSometimes
Total cost of attendance$78,000–$90,000Mostly or fully covered

When a school averages $85,000+/year in aid, it means the typical international student is paying little to nothing out of pocket.

Key Takeaways#

Liberal arts colleges dominate#

Of the top 20, 12 are liberal arts colleges (Wesleyan, Williams, Wellesley, Haverford, Pomona, Vassar, Smith, Amherst, Swarthmore, Colby, Colgate). Don't overlook them — smaller schools often have more generous per-student aid.

Every Ivy League school makes the list (almost)#

5 Ivy League schools appear: Cornell (#9), Dartmouth (#10), Yale (#11), Brown (#16), and Princeton is just outside at similar levels. Harvard, Columbia, and Penn offer comparable aid but aren't in this particular top 20 snapshot.

Women's colleges are exceptionally generous#

3 women's colleges make the top 20: Wellesley (#4), Smith (#12). If you're a woman, these schools offer some of the most generous aid anywhere.

You don't need to attend the most famous school to get the most money#

Wesleyan (#1 at $90,106) gives more average aid than Harvard, MIT, or Stanford. Haverford (#5 at $87,516) gives more than Yale. Name recognition doesn't equal aid generosity.

The range is tight at the top#

The difference between #1 (Wesleyan at $90,106) and #20 (Tufts at $80,079) is about $10,000/year. Any school in this top 20 is providing life-changing financial support.

How to Maximize Your Financial Aid#

  1. Apply to multiple schools from this list — different schools may calculate your need differently, resulting in different aid packages
  2. Submit your CSS Profile on time — late financial aid applications can mean reduced packages
  3. Be thorough and honest — provide complete financial documentation so schools can accurately assess your need
  4. Compare packages carefully — look at the total cost after aid, not just the scholarship amount
  5. Contact financial aid offices — if your circumstances change or you receive a better offer elsewhere, schools may adjust your package

The Four-Year Value#

Over four years, the financial aid from these schools represents extraordinary value:

Average Aid/Year4-Year Total Aid
$90,000$360,000
$85,000$340,000
$80,000$320,000

These aren't loans — at most of these schools, the aid is entirely grants that you never pay back.
