How to Get Full Scholarships in America: Step-by-Step Guide for International Students

If you come from a poor background or simply don't have money to study in America, don't give up on your dreams. I'm here to tell you that there are several colleges and universities in America that give full scholarships to international students. The key is knowing exactly how to apply and what these schools require.

I've helped thousands of students navigate this process, and today I'm going to walk you through every single step you need to take to get a full scholarship in America. If you want to see a full list of schools offering 100% scholarships, check out my guide on 100% scholarships for international students in the USA.

Getting Started: The Common Application#

The first thing you need to do is create a Common App account. This is absolutely essential because this is what you're going to use to apply to colleges and universities that offer full scholarships.

Once you create your account, you'll need to fill it with all your relevant information. The schools want to know:

  • Information about your family
  • Details about your schooling
  • Where you come from
  • What your background looks like

Be thorough and honest when filling out this information. It forms the foundation of your application.

Writing Your Application Essay#

After completing your basic information, you'll need to write an essay. This essay is probably one of the most important parts of your application because it's going to indicate to the school exactly who you are and what you're planning to do with your future.

Your essay should:

  • Show your personality and character
  • Demonstrate your goals and ambitions
  • Explain why you deserve a full scholarship
  • Connect your background to your future plans

Selecting Schools That Offer Full Scholarships#

Here's where strategy becomes crucial. You need to make sure that you're applying to colleges and universities that actually give full scholarships to international students. You can select up to 20 colleges and universities to apply to through Common App.

I've compiled comprehensive lists of schools that offer these opportunities. Check out my guides on 10 American universities with 100% scholarships and 20 colleges offering full scholarships to international students to get you started.

For students who don't want to take standardized tests, I also have a list of universities offering 100% scholarships with no SAT requirements.

Required Letters of Recommendation#

Teacher Recommendations#

You'll need one to three letters of recommendation from your teachers. Here's how it works:

  1. You put your teacher's email into Common App
  2. Common App sends that teacher an email
  3. The teacher fills out a form on your behalf

Choose teachers who know you well and can speak to your academic abilities and character.

School Counselor Recommendation#

You'll also need a letter of recommendation from your school counselor. This person can be:

  • Your principal
  • Vice principal
  • Someone in the administration at your school

This individual has to be able to talk about the courses you've taken and give insight on the school you attended. This person will also be the one uploading your transcripts (basically your report card).

The CSS Profile: Your Key to Financial Aid#

Make sure you also fill out the CSS Profile because that is required from most schools in order for them to give you a full scholarship. This document helps universities understand your financial situation and determine your need for aid.

Many students skip this step, but it's absolutely critical for getting full funding. For a list of schools that fully fund master's students, see 25 schools with full scholarships for master's international students.

Getting Fee Waivers#

Here's something many students don't know: you can get a fee waiver to apply to all of these schools. This means you won't have to pay application fees, which can add up quickly when you're applying to multiple universities.

For more information about schools with no application fees, check out my guide on American universities offering full scholarships with no application fees.

Timeline and Deadlines#

Timing is everything when it comes to scholarship applications. Different schools have different deadlines, and missing them means missing out on opportunities.

I regularly update lists of schools with upcoming deadlines. For example, I have guides covering schools with January deadlines and schools still accepting applications.

Special Opportunities#

Transfer Students#

If you're already in college and want to transfer, there are universities offering full scholarships specifically for transfer students.

Graduate Students#

For those pursuing advanced degrees, I have a comprehensive list of American universities offering full scholarships for master's degree students.

Tuition-Free Universities#

Some universities are completely tuition-free. Check out my guide on tuition-free universities for international students in America. For a completely free option, consider University of the People, which offers accredited, tuition-free online degrees.

Your Action Plan#

Here's your step-by-step checklist:

  1. Create your Common App account
  2. Fill out all personal and family information
  3. Write a compelling essay
  4. Research and select up to 20 schools that offer full scholarships
  5. Request teacher recommendations (1-3 teachers)
  6. Get your school counselor recommendation
  7. Complete the CSS Profile
  8. Apply for fee waivers
  9. Submit applications before deadlines
