Master's in Nursing (MSN) Scholarships for International Students (2026)
Pro Tip

Honest framing: Master's-level nursing scholarships in the US for international students are rare and competitive. Hopkins and Vanderbilt are among the few top schools that even let international applicants compete for institutional aid — but most awards are partial, not full-tuition. Plan to combine any scholarship with loans (e.g., MPOWER Financing) unless you land one of the limited full-tuition awards.

Finding a funded Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program that accepts international students is extremely rare. Most U.S. nursing graduate programs either don't admit international students or offer no financial aid at all.

These 2 universities are among the few exceptions — both have scholarship programs that international MSN students can apply for at two of the best nursing schools in America. Full-tuition awards exist at both, but they are competitive — most students who attend combine partial aid with loans.

Nursing RankingTop 5 in America

Johns Hopkins is synonymous with healthcare excellence. The School of Nursing is consistently ranked among the top 5 nursing schools in the country, and it sits within one of the world's leading academic medical centers.

MSN students at Hopkins train alongside physicians, researchers, and public health professionals at Johns Hopkins Hospital — ranked the #1 or #2 hospital in America year after year. The clinical experience is unmatched.

Hopkins automatically considers admitted students for institutional aid, including programs like the Bloomberg Distinguished Scholars. Full-tuition awards exist but are competitive — most MSN students combine partial scholarships with loans.

Pro Tip

Caveat: "Automatic consideration" does not mean "automatic full-tuition scholarship." Plan for partial scholarship + loans as your baseline.

Why Johns Hopkins#

  • World-class clinical training at Johns Hopkins Hospital and affiliated facilities
  • Research opportunities at a university that spends billions on medical and health research annually
  • Baltimore location — close to Washington, D.C., the NIH, and major health policy organizations
  • Global reputation — a Johns Hopkins nursing degree is recognized and respected worldwide
  • Bloomberg School of Public Health next door — opportunities for interdisciplinary study in the #1 public health school in the world

2. Vanderbilt University#

Nursing RankingTop 10 in America

Vanderbilt's School of Nursing is ranked in the top 10 nationally and offers a range of MSN specializations. The school is part of Vanderbilt University Medical Center — one of the largest academic medical centers in the Southeast.

Vanderbilt's signature VUSN scholarship is a full-tuition award given to approximately 3 nursing students per year. International students are eligible to compete. Other MSN students receive partial scholarships or use loans.

Pro Tip

Caveat: Only ~3 VUSN scholarships are awarded per year — the competition is intense. Most Vanderbilt MSN students do not receive full tuition.

Why Vanderbilt#

  • Top-10 nursing program with multiple MSN specializations
  • Vanderbilt University Medical Center provides exceptional clinical training
  • Nashville is one of America's fastest-growing cities and a major healthcare hub — home to the headquarters of many national healthcare companies
  • Grants over loans — Vanderbilt's philosophy of replacing loans with grants applies to graduate students as well
  • Supportive environment — smaller class sizes and strong faculty mentorship

Important Considerations for International MSN Students#

Licensure#

To practice as an advanced practice nurse in the U.S., you typically need to:

  • Hold a valid RN license (pass the NCLEX-RN if you don't already have one)
  • Complete your MSN program
  • Pass a national certification exam in your specialty (e.g., FNP, PMHNP, CRNA)

Work Authorization#

  • OPT: 12 months of post-graduation work authorization (nursing is not classified as STEM)
  • H-1B sponsorship: Healthcare employers are often willing to sponsor work visas for advanced practice nurses, especially in areas with shortages
  • The nursing shortage in the U.S. works in your favor for employment and visa sponsorship

Career Outlook#

RoleMedian Salary
Nurse Practitioner (NP)$121,000/year
Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS)$100,000/year
Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA)$203,000/year
Nurse Midwife (CNM)$120,000/year

An MSN significantly increases your earning potential compared to a BSN ($86,000 median). Advanced practice roles like Nurse Practitioner and Nurse Anesthetist are among the highest-paid nursing positions.
