Common App Requirements for International Students (Part 7)
Learn exactly what you need for your Common App: essays, teacher recommendations, counselor letters, and transcripts to apply for full scholarships in America.

Welcome back to part 7 of my series on studying in America for free! If you've been following along, you know I'm breaking down exactly how international students can get full scholarships for bachelor's degrees in the US. In my last video, I covered English proficiency exams. Today, I'm diving into everything else you need to complete your applications through the Common App.
What is the Common App?#
The Common Application (Common App) is the platform you'll use to apply to many of the scholarship-offering schools I'll be sharing later in this series. It's a centralized system that lets you apply to multiple universities with one application — but you need to get all your documents ready first.
Essays for Your Common App#
You're going to need essays as part of your Common App submission. These aren't just any essays — they're your chance to show admissions committees who you are beyond your grades and test scores. I'll cover essay strategies in detail in future parts of this series, but know that this is a crucial component of your application.
Teacher Recommendation Letters#
Here's exactly how teacher recommendations work on the Common App:
How the Process Works#
- You enter your teacher's email into the Common App system
- The Common App automatically sends them an email asking them to create a profile
- Your teacher fills out information about you through their Common App account
- They submit their recommendation directly through the platform
What Teachers Write About#
Your teachers will be asked to evaluate:
- Your character as a student
- How you performed in their class
- Whether they recommend you for university study
How Many Do You Need?#
You need approximately two teacher recommendation letters for your application to be considered complete. Choose teachers who know you well and can speak positively about your academic abilities and character.
If you're looking for schools that don't require SAT scores, check out my guide on 20 American universities offering 100% scholarships to international students with no SAT requirements.
Counselor Recommendation Letter#
The counselor recommendation is different from teacher recommendations. This letter focuses on:
- Who you are as a student overall
- Your character and personal qualities
- Your academic ability compared to other students in your school
Who Can Write Your Counselor Recommendation?#
Your counselor recommendation can come from:
- Principal
- Vice principal
- Head teacher
- Any school official with access to grades
The key requirement is that this person must have access to grades in your school and be able to speak about the school as a whole. They need the authority and knowledge to put your academic performance in context.

Transcripts (Report Cards)#
Your transcripts are your official academic records — basically your report cards from previous years of study. Here's what you need to know:
- Your counselor uploads these documents, not you
- These show your academic performance over time
- They're required for application completion
Make sure your counselor has access to all your academic records and understands how to upload them through the Common App system.
Complete Common App Requirements Checklist#
Here's everything you need for your Common App submission:
| Document Type | Who Provides | Number Needed | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essays | You | Varies by school | Show personality and goals |
| Teacher Recommendations | Teachers | ~2 | Academic performance and character |
| Counselor Recommendation | School official | 1 | Overall student profile |
| Transcripts | Counselor | All years | Academic record |
