If you're between 18 and 26 years old and you want to come live and work in the United States, there's a program most people don't know about — and it doesn't require a college degree or a full scholarship.

It's called the Au Pair Program, and it's one of the simplest ways to get to America legally.

What Is the Au Pair Program?#

The U.S. government runs this program because they want American kids to be exposed to people from different cultures. Here's how it works:

  • You come to the United States on a J-1 Exchange Visitor visa
  • You live with an American host family
  • The family gives you a place to stay, food, and a weekly salary
  • In return, you take care of their children

It's a cultural exchange — you get to experience American life, and the family gets reliable childcare from someone with a different cultural background.

What Do You Get?#

HousingFree room with your host family
FoodMeals provided by the family
Weekly payMinimum $195.75/week
Education stipendUp to $500 for classes

Who Can Apply?#

The requirements are straightforward:

  • Age: 18 to 26 years old
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent
  • English: You need to speak English well enough to communicate with the family and children
  • Childcare experience: At least 200 hours of documented childcare experience
  • Health: Good physical and mental health
  • Background check: Clean criminal record

You do not need a college degree. You do not need to be a student. This is open to anyone who meets the age and experience requirements.

How to Apply: Step by Step#

  1. Choose an agency — This is the most important step. You must go through a U.S. Department of State-designated sponsor agency. Two of the biggest are:

    • Cultural Care Au Pair — the largest au pair agency in the world
    • Au Pair in America — one of the oldest and most trusted agencies
  2. Complete the application — The agency will walk you through it. You'll need to provide documents, references, and proof of childcare experience.

  3. Get matched with a family — The agency matches you with a host family based on your preferences and theirs.

  4. Get your visa — The agency sponsors your J-1 visa. They handle the paperwork.

  5. Travel to America — The agency helps coordinate your travel and arrival.

  6. Start your au pair year — Live with your host family, take care of their kids, and experience American life.

Why This Is a Smart Path#

The au pair program isn't just about childcare — it's a gateway to America. Here's why it's strategic:

  • You're in the U.S. legally with a visa and work authorization
  • You save money — housing and food are covered, so your salary is mostly savings
  • You build connections — your host family and their network can open doors
  • You can take classes — the education stipend lets you start college courses
  • You experience American culture firsthand — which helps if you want to study or work here long-term

Many former au pairs go on to apply for college in the U.S. with a much stronger understanding of how the system works.

What Comes After?#

After your au pair year (or two), you have several options:

  1. Apply to a U.S. university — use the full scholarship guide to find fully funded programs
  2. Apply to University of the Peopletuition-free online degrees you can start anytime
  3. Return home with valuable experience and English fluency
  4. Explore other visa options — your time in the U.S. gives you a network and understanding of the system
