3 Top Nursing Schools with Master's Scholarships for International Students
Pro Tip

Honest framing: Master's-level nursing scholarships in the US for international students are real, but most are competitive, partial, or have eligibility restrictions — not guaranteed full-tuition for every admit. Plan to combine any scholarship with loans (e.g., MPOWER Financing) unless you land one of the limited full-tuition awards.

Getting a Master's in Nursing (MSN) in America as an international student is hard but not impossible. Three top nursing schools offer scholarship programs that international applicants can compete for. Here's what's actually available at each — and where the catches are.

Johns Hopkins University: Institutional Aid Available (Mostly Partial)#

Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland is one of the most prestigious nursing schools in America. Hopkins School of Nursing offers a range of scholarship programs, including the Bloomberg Distinguished Scholars and various need-based awards.

Hopkins automatically considers admitted students for institutional aid — so you don't need a separate scholarship application. However, most awards are partial, not full-tuition. Full-tuition scholarships at Hopkins exist but are competitive, and the majority of MSN students self-fund or take loans for the remainder of their tuition.

Pro Tip

Caveat: "Automatic consideration" does not mean "automatic full-tuition scholarship." Plan for partial aid + loans unless you have a strong reason to believe you'll be selected for a top award.

Vanderbilt University: VUSN Scholarship — 3 Awards Per Year#

Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee offers the VUSN scholarship, a full-tuition award for nursing students.

Here's what you need to know:

  • They award approximately 3 VUSN scholarships per year
  • These are full tuition scholarships
  • The competition is intense due to the limited number

This is one of the most honest "full scholarship" claims on this list because the number is real and small. If you have strong academics and nursing experience, you could be one of those three. Most other Vanderbilt MSN students rely on partial scholarships or loans.

Oregon Health and Science University: President's Fund Scholarship (Need-Based)#

Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) in Portland, Oregon offers the President's Fund Scholarship.

The scholarship can cover:

  • Tuition
  • Fees
  • Duration of your studies (in some cases)
Pro Tip

Caveat: The President's Fund is need-based, not automatic for every admit. International student eligibility is restricted for many OHSU institutional aid programs — check the specific eligibility rules carefully before assuming you qualify.

Why These Opportunities Matter#

The U.S. nursing shortage means there's genuine demand for qualified professionals, and these three schools have scholarship pipelines that are at least open to international applicants — which is rare in nursing graduate education. Most U.S. nursing MSN programs either don't admit international students or offer no aid at all.

But you should plan realistically: assume your funding will be partial scholarship + loans, and consider any full-tuition award a bonus rather than a baseline.

Tips for Strengthening Your Applications#

While these schools automatically consider you for scholarships, you still need to submit strong applications:

  • Academic Excellence: Maintain high GPAs and standardized test scores
  • Nursing Experience: Clinical experience, volunteering, or previous healthcare work
  • Personal Statement: Clearly articulate your nursing goals and why you chose that specific program
  • Letters of Recommendation: Strong references from professors or healthcare professionals

Beyond These Three Universities#

While Johns Hopkins, Vanderbilt, and OHSU are excellent starting points, they're not your only options. I've identified 12 programs that offer full funding for Master's degrees, including several nursing programs.

Taking Action#

Don't let financial concerns stop you from pursuing your nursing education in America. These three schools have scholarship pipelines that are open to international applicants — which is rare. Apply, write strong essays, and pursue every scholarship you're eligible for at each school.

Just plan honestly: assume partial scholarship + loans as your baseline, with a full-tuition scholarship as the upside. The nursing profession needs dedicated international students, and these schools are among the most accessible starting points.
